Soundly Asleep

When I wake up in the middle of the night
And see your silhouette laying there, soundly asleep
I stop and think about all of the other places
That you could possibly be at this moment,
The kind of person you may have become,
The decisions that were not made,
The fact that you're asleep, soundly
The events that led up to this moment,
Of us permanently intertwined, to some degree
No matter what the future may bring.

I think of all these things, then realize
That in spite of all my thinking,
The fact is that you chose to be here,
Tonight
And you are content enough to fall soundly asleep.
Beside me.

I then kiss your cheek,
And fall back asleep.
